researchquestion This study investigates how erythrocytes in hemodialysis patients deal with the large loss of plasma ascorbate with long-term hemodialysis and whether enhanced expression of glucose transporter 1 on erythrocyte membrane in hemodialysis patients plays a role in erythrocyte ascorbate recycling.

inclusion Patients who had been stable on thrice weekly hemodiaylsis and who had permanent blood access capable of delivering a blood flow rate of at least 200 ml min-1,were eligible for inclusion in the study.
exclusion -diabetes mellitus
-thalassemia
-smoker
-C-reactive protein level ≧0.6 mg dl-1
-Patient who took angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI), oral and intravenous vitamins or iron were also excluded.
primaryoutcomes Comparison of intra-erythrocyte ascrobate and DHA concentrations, GLUT 1 expression levels on EM and in vitro studies of ?erythrocyte ascorbate recycling? in age- and sex- matched healthy subjects and HD patients pre- and post-hemodialysis
secondaryoutcomes Comparison of ascorbate-preserving ability for erythrocytes in different study groups
