Nephrology: Clinical Research for Nephrologists
Introduction
- Craig JC, Hawley C. Clinical research for nephrologists: a practical series. Nephrology. 2010;15(1):7
In this issue we launch a series that is aimed to provide readers with tools so that they can find, evaluate and apply clinical research to their own practice in a time-friendly and effective manner, and, might even be inspired to conduct their own research.
We have designed this series to be comprehensive, clinically relevant, and to be read and used. As well as covering the usual methods of systematic reviews, trials and diagnostic test evaluation, we have also covered newer approaches to literature searching, and important issues of economic evaluation and research transfer into practice and policy, which are usually neglected.
Each paper begins with a clinical scenario that frames the research question, and provides a framework for each paper. Most papers are short, and written with the recognition that busy clinical readers have too many other commitments and too little time to read all papers in their “would be good to read at some time”stack.
The tragedy of nephrology practice is that there has been little if any change in the poor prognosis for people with chronic kidney disease. A mortality rate of 10—15% per year for people on dialysis is simply unacceptable. If there is to be the improvement, which for the sake of these people and their families, there must be, then more and better research must occur. This series is designed to promote such research and assist nephrologists to use existing research better.
