Cochrane Systematic Review Workshop - Systematic Transplantation

When & where

Date: Sunday 10th August from 08.30-12.30
Venue: Sydney Convention Centre, Parkside Room 110A

About this workshop

The fundamentals of systematic reviews (meta-analysis) of randomised controlled trials and diagnostic test accuracy applied to Transplantation

There are an increasing number of randomised trials of diverse interventions measuring different outcomes in the transplantation literature. Comparing trial results can be bewildering. Systematic reviews aim to condense this literature, and meta-analyses combine and synthesise results of many trials. Increasingly, transplant surgeons and physicians are being confronted with meta-analyses in the published literature

But can they be trusted? What makes a good or a bad meta-analysis? How can they help you treat specific patient groups?

The aim of the meeting is to provide participants with an understanding of the fundamental concepts of meta-analyses, both of randomised controlled trials and diagnostic test accuracy studies, so that they might be able to critically appraise published meta-analyses and apply the results. Examples from the Transplantation literature will be used, and the meeting will be run as a workshop with an opportunity to work through examples and ask questions.

Topics covered will include where to find meta-analyses, how to distinguish misleading from valid meta-analyses, meta-regression, summary receiver operating characteristic curves, and applicability of meta-analyses to policy and practice. Participants will receive course notes covering all topics covered. The workshop will cover 6 themes:

  1. Fundamental concepts in meta-analysis
  2. How to search for meta-analyses (where to look)
  3. Critical appraisal of meta-analyses (telling the good from the bad)
  4. Understanding diagnostic test accuracy reviews
  5. Interpreting sub group analyses and meta-regression (the bells and whistles)
  6. Finding answers and applying results for your patients
